Egypt Flag - Colors, Meaning & History

The Eagle of Saladin is a symbol of strength, courage, and victory. It is named after Saladin, a Muslim military leader who defeated the Crusaders in the 12th century.
The national flag of Egypt is a tricolor consisting of three equal horizontal bands of red, white, and black. In the center of the white band is Egypt's national emblem, the golden Eagle of Saladin.
The red, white, and black bands are said to represent the following:
  • Red: The blood spilled during Egypt's struggle for independence
  • White: The purity and peace desired by the Egyptian people
  • Black: The dark past of Egypt before the revolution
